Villa hin oder her.

I Love It

Rollin‘, rollin‘, rollin‘ — and the soundtrack of grazing cows becomes the background hum for the next leg of our Ride on the Waikyrie. A daring undertaking that sometimes feels like it will never end, sometimes like it could end at any moment, and occasionally manages to be both at once.

The first two years of euphoria and exhilaration are behind us now, preserved as memories filled with disbelief, admiration, and quiet satisfaction. Taking the leap was the right decision. But, without exaggerating for once: it has been, and still is, unexpectedly exhausting.

Fetching water, hunting for an internet connection, winning new customers, keeping old ones — and my wife — happy: that has become an ambitious daily routine. So far, a successful one, I’m pleased to admit. Yet the silken thread from which our fortunes presently hang is a fragile one.

As fragile as the threads of love always are, no matter how sturdy we imagine them to be. I can say that now because only after seeing Zoé and her partner again did I realize how far we had drifted apart, and how important it was to blindly follow that thread back into her heart — while gently opening the heart of the man she loves just a little for me as well.

I’ve had similar experiences with my mother, even though our family relationships remain fragile. It’s complicated, as one might put it in a social media status. Which isn’t too bad, considering how desperately I wished, as a little boy, that Sabine would answer my heartfelt „Will you go out with me?“ with at least a simple „Maybe.“

Well, life has its own plans. Sabine became a doctor, and Silvana ticked the „Yes“ box. Thank God. Just imagine — I might be living in Oer-Erkenschwick now. Mansion or not.

No. My home is the Jürmann. My wife is Silvana. My shop is Goethereif. As for tomorrow — we’ll see. Most likely from Luxembourg or northern France.

Rollin‘, rollin‘, rollin‘——

Also beginne ich in Meschede.

Please don’t rescue us

How does one begin writing again after such a long time?

Of course, there are valid reasons for my long abstinence from writing. But who wants to read what one has long since imagined for oneself in far brighter and more life-affirming colours? Who wants problems — in colour, with a certificate of authenticity?

So I begin in Meschede. In the Sauerland. Between Brilon, Warstein and Soest. From a latently crooked car park, where our home currently looks a little more tilted than usual.

The Ride of the Valkyrie — or rather: the freestyle as art — has, in any case, gained a certain seriousness. Six thousand euros and eight months later, Silvana and Ulf have been living for three months again in the Jürmann, which we now simply call Stu. A rolling construction-site home. Five square metres for working, rebuilding, moving, living and loving.

Self-employment, the beginner’s blues and a permanent stress we chose voluntarily have defined our everyday life for ninety days now. And still, we simply cannot stop.

Yes, we agree that sometimes we can hardly go on. But everything we left behind seems worse to us.

Waiting for doctors’ appointments. For authorities. For all that other petty nonsense that arrives in the singsong of an ever more secular sanctimony and brings Silvana and Ulf — like Rilke’s panther as the bars pass before him — a little closer to the civilisational cage of resignation.

Handing over responsibility. For money.

Sometimes one no longer even knows what makes it worth opening one’s eyes in the morning. And yes — I think I can understand Van Gogh better today than I could a few years ago.

If only it weren’t for the fireflies. The rabbits. The hares. The birds.

How glad I am not to be able to understand their voices. Imagine two blackbirds loudly quarrelling over a worm. Or a beaver having to answer to an authority for disregarding building regulations.

Sometimes I feel a little like Timmy the whale, stranded on a German coast, and simply hope that people will leave us in peace.

Two more months

I know, I know, I’m keeping myself to myself at the moment, which I don’t like either, but it seems as if my body and soul are preparing for a big challenge.
I sleep a lot, eat extremely healthily most of the time, no alcohol, little smoking, and I’m mastering everything I can expect of myself with confidence, but it takes a lot of energy because I’m getting used to it.

I sleep a lot, eat extremely healthily most of the time, no alcohol, little smoking, and I’m mastering everything I can expect of myself with confidence, but it takes a lot of energy because I’m weaning myself off getting upset and swearing.

You could say I’m succeeding, but as with a serious illness, all my fighting potential seems to be focused on these enemies, and all too often I fall to the ground like an empty shell.

A good new, energizing momentum that was new to me until now. I’m curious to see when I’ll need to draw on these resources, but the feeling that they’re there when I need them is indescribable!

Also langsam.

Geburtstag.

Obwohl, wer will schon alleine 100 Jahre alt werden?

English

If even the price of love is a gift

They say age is just a number, but at the latest when, like me, you’re barreling toward 50, it starts to feel personal.

Suddenly—almost overnight—you can’t handle alcohol anymore. Somehow your range of movement is restricted too, which is also due to the increasing weight, because your metabolism slows down and your mind becomes sluggish. Sweets to “calm the soul” get treated as a little indulgence, even though you know: it’s not really a good idea.

And the nighttime binge-eating attacks quietly turn into an added bathroom break—but somehow not much comes out.
Uh-oh…

I have to change a few things, I thought, and I considered where to start. The lemon in the morning before coffee to “cleanse the liver” had already become routine for quite a while, since I still enjoy drinking beer in the evening far too much—also not a good idea.

So, slowly. The morning acid attack, as a former student told me, would not only cleanse the liver but also have a detoxifying effect if you add freshly grated ginger, honey, and turmeric. A small optimization of an already familiar ritual—I can manage that, I thought, and I tuned my morning routine. No, I’m not slim again yet, but it worked (or works): the first kilos started to drop.

Now it’s time to finally confront those hated binge attacks. That was harder, but combined with a strict ban on sweets and cutting out cola light entirely—which I drank by the liter—it was only a short, cold withdrawal. Because the sugar that makes you nervous, and the sugar illusion from saccharin as a sugar substitute in the cola, reduced the cravings, so after about four weeks I’d gotten over the nightly hunger pangs; I still wanted to pee, but it still didn’t really want to flow properly.

As a scaredy-cat, I avoided the doctor like the devil avoids holy water and thought nature has a solution for many things, which is why I looked into the ingredients of prostate medications: omega-3 fatty acids, beta-carotene, zinc, selenium, and nettle root. Sounds disgusting—and let’s not kid ourselves: it is.

So I’ve been addressing a beta-carotene deficiency for two weeks now with a glass of carrot juice about an hour after the ginger-lemon cure. But I didn’t know which foods contain selenium, so I got myself zinc (yes: spinach and fish/omega-3 comes with good olive oil—omega-3 again—from Greece, which also goes into the right salad/zinc, meaning head lettuce, lamb’s lettuce, and arugula), high-dose selenium as a dietary supplement, and—so as not to overstrain this whole blog—magnesium right away for bones and nerves, plus high-dose vitamin D as well, against sun deprivation. And the at least two liters of cola light, as well as every cup of coffee each day except the first, I replaced with nettle tea.

My breakfast spread—muesli with nuts, chia seeds, flaxseed, and pumpkin seeds, plus three tablets—and the black bread instead of rolls for dinner already look frighteningly like something a grandpa would do, but what can I say? It works.

I’ve practically earned my two beers in the evening, even though that ritual—and the cigarettes when I’m nervous or bored—absolutely still need to be compensated for too; but according to the internet doctor, my prescription weed is already coming on Monday, which you can also get as an oil for tea.

So maybe the 100th birthday can still happen after all.

Although—who wants to live to 100 alone?
Actually, my whole health and well-being are just a nice side effect, because Silvana is gradually doing worse and worse psychologically. She suffers from the loneliness on the island and from the human coldness at the workplace—unbearable torment—and right now she needs a partner more urgently than ever, someone who keeps their nerve and is always there for her.

While my wonderful daughter—whom I love more than anything—might be able to face the possible loss of her father with strength, I cannot, must not, and do not want to leave my equally beloved wife alone under any circumstances.

The last thing she needs is a physical and emotional wreck by her side.

And I need nothing more than her!

Neuland in Sicht

New territory in sight
Oh man, it’s about time. Silvana and I are slowly getting settled in and feeling cabin fever. Yes, even here on Norderney it’s an exciting adventure. Just yesterday, I encountered a young deer in the middle of the wild snowy landscape, as if he were a humanoid neighbor. We stood face to face, no more than two meters apart.

His gaze was fresh and curious, with a hint of skepticism, but not because I was a human being; he was obviously used to that, because he didn’t flee, even when I got closer. It was more a question of why I was still here. Me, Ulf.
I could have cried, because of course I wanted, we wanted, to be back on the road enjoying life again.

Twenty-four hours later, I walked along the silence, I mean of course my job, or both?! where I encountered the majestic animal I just sang about and felt an indescribable feeling of hope within me, which was later confirmed. Silvana spoke to our trusted repair shop and revealed to me the quintessence: if I stop here in April, the Jürmann will be ready to drive again.

Joy, the most beautiful spark of the gods: we’re on the road again.

2026

Danke.

2026

The new year is picking up speed. That’s good, because there’s hardly any room for lethargy. The snow around us envelops everything in a frozen stillness, inviting us to contemplate a winter snapshot.

Suddenly, a supposed catastrophe is no longer a process rooted in the past and extending into the future, but rather like a leafless branch that radiates its own unique fascination.

The sun, which shines over the snowy landscapes every morning, becomes a glowing passion that makes its demands: Follow me! Look up! Here you will find the warmth that your battered soul so desperately longs for.“
I trust you, fireball of nitrogen, helium, and other elements and molecules fused together. You melt everything and transform brute force into pleasant warmth.

Thank you.

Hoffen verboten

Was dann?

Oder will man mich prüfen?

Hope forbidden

It’s hard for me to write because I feel like the ground is being pulled out from under me. I get praise for my teaching from those who come, but many no longer come.

I endure it with the greatest effort to maintain my dignity, but it’s hard to believe in myself right now.

So much cheapness that I can’t keep up. So much disinterest that it’s almost unbearable. Persevere, says my partner. But how?

As always, I give my all and feel more and more like a bucket emptying. What now? What next? I must have done something terrible to feel so punished.

Or are they testing me? Again and again? Thank God I’m not alone, otherwise I would probably fall back into old, self-destructive rituals, but right now it really feels like I’m up to my neck in shit, just keeping my head above water.

But I’m still looking ahead, only I can see nothing but the fog of life. Everywhere.

Perhaps I am fortunate that much of the discomfort to come remains unrecognizable in it.

I couldn’t bear the certainty.

We absolutely have to go again soon.

My soul thirsts for relief, liberation, and everything that makes the poetry muscles smile again.

It will be so, because I have forbidden myself to hope. For those who hope have actually already lost hope long ago.

And now: the commercial break.

You make me swing

Dis Dur dances. Da ein Cis. Schwingungen sind alles. Ob groß oder klein, dick oder dünn, alt oder jung.in dem was uns ungleich macht, also maximal 2 Prozent DNA, sitzen die Schwingungsunterschiede von Bach und Mozart, Ulf und Dir.

Ich schwinge, also bin ich. Ulf. Silvana, Weihnachtsmann, auch Ulf als Weihnachtsmann.

Die dritte Kerze. Alles wird ein kleines bisschen schneller. Bald die Vierte. Wieder.

Also manchmal, wenn mein Dis Dur dances.

You make me swing

D major dances. A C sharp. Vibrations are everything. Whether big or small, thick or thin, old or young. In what makes us different, i.e. a maximum of 2 percent DNA, lie the vibrational differences between Bach and Mozart, Ulf and you.

I vibrate, therefore I am. Ulf. Silvana, Santa Claus, Ulf as Santa Claus too.

The third candle. Everything gets a little bit faster. Soon the fourth. Again.

And I can’t do anything about it, so I enjoy it. I deliberately vibrate a little slower to feel the vibration coming from Middelberg behind the glass counter as a vibration beneath the “what can I do for you” directed at me, mixing with my vibrations as it dissipates over shop windows, house corners, and bushes.

So sometimes, when my D major dances. And there’s a C sharp. Maybe there’s no objective. But only the favorable opportunity from the exactly right vibrations of excavators, tooth brushing, and “what can I do for you” to and from my snail (dudum dsch) hammer and anvil.

Then I am the only thing that hears D sharp dancing and then a C sharp, or better…

That almost makes me like the excavator…

Mord. Betrug. Lust. Not.

Gut, dass man alles bezahlen kann! Sogar Verantwortung.

Romanticism

I write a blog, I write my book, I write a blog. Yes, it was a seemingly small flower with only three petals. So I could have known the outcome beforehand. Malicious tongues might even claim that I already knew what I was doing.

You could say that I already knew what the answer to my supposed question would be/would have been.

So why did I even ask the question and not just start the blog, or did I even do that?!

And if a blog, why a blog and not a book or something? Because I’m like everyone else. I crave more in reserve. Good to know, good to have. Is it still there? Ah, good, it’s still there, but wait, why not more, why so little? That has to change. I have to act, take responsibility for the reserve that can be fulfilled as universally as possible with money.

Everything can be bought. Murder. Fraud. Lust. Need.

It’s good that you can pay for everything! Even responsibility. Why think for yourself when artificial intelligence can do it so much better and faster?

I have fulfilled my responsibility by paying for everything with money.

If I have money, I have no worries, because worries are the fear of the consequences of not having fulfilled my own responsibility.

The only thing we can learn from this is that the general public largely lives according to this maxim.

Actually, if you take a quick look, you can almost always tell in advance which flower your counterpart is struggling with and which monetary proposition they are considering.

And then I glance briefly at my four-leaf clover. I simply stopped counting too soon. No one expected it, except perhaps me. I probably knew the answer all along. Although, maybe it wasn’t about money at all; but what then?

The rushing river of life
Things are getting a bit much at the moment. Getting stuff, repairing Jürmann, living incognito, building up the company, and the last two years still weighing heavily on me.
I’m tired and worn out from constantly being on the go, my soul is crying out for peace and quiet and looking forward to Christmas, when all I have to do is prepare and visit Alfredo, nothing else.

Mom is a little worried, I can sense that, and I hope I can dispel these gray clouds. I want everyone to be well.

I didn’t think that age would catch up with me at my pace, but now I feel it has touched me, like playing tag with my fingertips: Gotcha!

But while as a child you are always annoyed at not being fast enough, I am secretly looking forward to being able to take a deep breath.
2026 won’t be any easier. Yesterday I saw Jürmann and there is a lot to do, but I am really looking forward to summer, palm trees, and sunshine.

It’s good that I have Silvana with me, because on my own I wouldn’t have the strength I need, but she swims calmly like a log next to me in the river of life as an omnipresent: Hold on to me.

That feels good.
